“It’s Always Easier and Cheaper in the Long Run to Just Do It Right In the First Place”

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Growing up, there was a grandfatherly fellow in our town that adopted all of us as kids as his own.  He would watch us, comment on how we’ve grown, ask us about our family, and often, share a bit of his wisdom.

He had a saying and a story for everything.  I mean everything.

If your hand itched he would say that meant money was coming your way. If you found a penny face up on the sidewalk, it was good luck.  If he saw a certain bird in the area, he told us that meant spring was on its way.

I always remember those sayings as I come across similar things in my life now and the events that promoted him to say it in the first place.

One time, there was a huge pothole in the street in the middle to town.  The road crew would come out and throw some dirt in it and a little asphalt and they would be gone.  After a few months, the hole was back and it was usually much bigger.

They would come back out with their trucks and shovels, throw some more dirt in the hole and lay a little more asphalt.  And once again, they were gone.

My wise mentor would watch each time the crew was out.  He would walk over to them as they worked and strike up a conversation about that pothole and offer his advice on the situation.

The road crew was there so often, they got to know my friend well.  And they would cringe as he walked up because they knew he was about to share his opinion with them if they wanted it or not.

He would ask them why they were there, even though it was obvious, and they would answer.  He would remind them it had only been a few months since they were there doing the same exact thing.  The supervisor would shrug and agree as the old gentlemen continued on.

“Now, don’t you think if you fixed it right, you could save yourself a lot of time and grief”, he said.

“Yeah, but the city wants us to save money so we can only do a patch”, the supervisor replied.

“Well seems to me, you have been here 4 times this year alone.  And you know you will have to be back here in a couple months again.  How can having 3 men waste their time doing the same thing over and over, be saving the city, and the taxpayers for that matter, any money?  Seems to be, It’s Always Easier and Cheaper in the Long Run to Just Do It Right In the First Place.”

I think about his words often.  As a dentist, when I see a patient suffering with a dental problem unnecessarily, it reminds me of the pothole.

Patients rely on me to give them my best treatment. They rely on me to fix it right the first time. And they want me to save them time, energy, as well as money in the long run.  That is my role as their dentist.

For patients who are missing teeth, that is why I recommend dental implants.  Not only do they replace the teeth, but they also stabilize the bite, provide a strong anchor of support for chewing, as well as give the patient back confidence and comfort that they won’t get with any other option.    Dental implants restore so much to a person’s quality of life; it is difficult to even put a figure on it.

Dental implants are the best option for tooth replacement.  It is a wonderful service that we enjoy providing for our VIPs (Very Important Patients!).  And just like my ‘adopted grandfather’, we always have room at our dental home for one more special person if you would like to join us here : http://implantdentistrymcminnville.com

Wisdom teeth are the third molars, the last teeth to come in to a person’s mouth. Usually wisdom teeth erupt around the age of twelve to fourteen. However, some times they come in earlier and sometimes later and sometimes they never come in. however, when wisdom teeth do erupt, they tend to come in spurts, leaving flaps of gum exposed. Food and other debris can easily get trapped under these flaps of gum which can result in impaction and infection. When this happens, the wisdom tooth must be extracted. Types of Dental Crowns and Advantages

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Dental crowns are used in cosmetic dentistry to help repair teeth damaged due to accidents, infection or disease. The process of fixing a dental crown mainly involves attaching a cap or a cover to the damaged tooth, implant or even a bridge. Dental crowns are of several types and each type has its own advantages for which it is chosen.

The various types of dental crowns are those of metal, ceramic or porcelain fused with metal. The type of crown you choose depends on your tooth structure and the purpose for which a crown is being attached.

Metal crowns are generally used for the back teeth. The advantages here are that they’re more durable and are strong and can bear the biting and grinding force. They aren’t popular for the front teeth because of their appearance. These types of dental crowns can be done in gold alloy, nickel alloy, palladium etc.

Ceramic crowns can be made of ceramic, porcelain, resins etc. One of the big advantages of these types of dental crowns is that they give an extremely natural appearance and are hence very popular for front teeth.

Porcelain fused to metal crowns are a combination of the above. The biggest advantage of these types of dental crowns is that they are stronger than ceramic crowns and look much better than metal crowns. However due to the metal, these don’t look as natural as ceramic crowns.

Composite Resin Dental Fillings - An Alternative to Traditional Metal Dental Fillings

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Metal fillings were very common two decades ago. Although they are effective they tend to get back over a period of time and become conspicuous while talking and laughing.. Composite fillings are better alternatives to amalgam fillings. Composite fillings made from plastic are durable and give a natural appearance. Composite resin dental fillings are therefore better alternatives to traditional metal dental fillings.

They do not cause any health hazard; they do not expand and contract with change in temperature like metal fillings. After a period of time metal fillings crack, whereas composite fillings do not. Since metal fillings had some shortcoming, composite resin dental filling was created as an alternative to traditional metal dental filling. Composite resins provide better results as compared to metal fillings. But cost wise they work out more expensive. Most of us prefer composite fillings for aesthetic reasons.

The methods of placing composite fillings are a little complicated. The tooth has to be kept away from the saliva to prevent it from becoming wet. A special light is utilized to harden the layer of the composite and give it a proper shape.

Ninety percent of people have not had any side effects after composite fillings. Make sure that you are not allergic to any material that is used in the mouth. If the filling causes rashes it is better to replace it with something that suits for you.

Look Younger with Dental Implants – McMinnville Implant Dentistry

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

McMinnville implant dentistry helps you to look younger with dental implants. This is because it prevents the loss of bone and the structure of the face remains intact.  In the past loss of teeth would have an effect on the facial structure and the face would get wrinkled even before getting old. Implant prevents this and makes you look younger.

In brief, daily use of dentures or when missing teeth is not replaced leads to bone loss, which in turn makes you look older. Dental implant makes the jaw and the facial structure strong and health as it preserves the jaw bone. Opting for dental implants become very necessary as the face is more likely to get collapsed without implants.

Through McMinnville implant dentistry you will look younger with dental implants and you will stand a better chance of living longer too. With improved chewing, your ability to eat nutritious food products like corn, apple and other such hard biting food will return on your plate. With improved chewing digestion also will get better.

Dental implant will also make you feel more relaxed as you will no longer have to worry about dentures flying or popping out while coughing, laughing, sneezing and eating. Implants eliminate the fear of it falling off as they make you feel like your original teeth.

Why Should you Replace Missing Teeth?

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

A tooth is no doubt a very small part of a person’s body. But they have a important role. Apart from eating and chewing, they are useful while speaking. Losing teeth can cause changes in a person’s speech and this affects his self confidence. The surrounding teeth can try to fill the position and they grow in an awkward manner. Missing teeth can also lead to improper nutrition and this affects a person’s health. Replacing missing teeth solves many such problems. A dental implant is a third option after bridges and dentures to replacing teeth. The entire process of dental implants takes only a short duration of time to heal.

Dental implants are imbedded directly in the jawbone. So, they feel like natural teeth. Dental implants do not require any adhesives nor does a person have to worry about them slipping or falling. Dental implants provide better chewing when compared to dentures. Upper dentures cover the palate region of the mouth leading to a reduction in the sense of taste. It improves self esteem as well as confidence and covers up a missing tooth in the best way. Despite all these advantages, there are certain people who are not suitable for dental implants. They are pregnant women, smokers, alcoholics and people suffering from chronic diseases, high blood pressure, connective tissue diseases, diabetes, immune deficiencies or hemophilia. The severity of the condition is to be considered before treatment.

Endodontist in McMinnville - The Root Canal Specialist

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Endodontist is a dentist who specialized in treating the inner core of teeth, allowing for a tooth rescue rather than simple removal. One of the most commonly known procedures an Endodontist is known for is the root canal procedure. Although regular dentists very often are able and willing to do this procedure themselves, it is an Endodontist who is the dental specialist and should be consulted. A root canal procedure is by no means an easy procedure and can be very rough on the patient. Many dentist phobias have resulted from root canal procedures which were lengthy and painful despite novocaine injections.

An Endodontist is the specialist who should be called in, if a root canal case is expected to be a problematic one. In order to avoid the aforementioned discomfort for the patient, the specialist can determine the best way of handling the procedure by using special microscopes and 3D high resolution imagery. Furthermore, the Endodontist can ensure that the procedure remains pain free and lasts less time. If you find out that you are in need of a root canal procedure, then it would be a sensitive choice to consult an Endodontist and have your root canal done by such a specialized dentist. If you are located in the area of McMinnvile, there is a very skilled Endodontist in your neighborhood.
